The New Year is Upon Us!
2012 is here.  It is the time of year when we reflect on the previous year and look forward to this coming year.  We make resolutions to better ourselves, which sometimes fall short (within about a week)!

Make a commitment to write down your resolutions and make short attainable goals to the bigger picture:

For example, say one your resolutions is the read the bible.  Write that down on a piece of paper and put it where you will see it everyday (bathroom mirror, alarm clock, etc.).  Then you would schedule (put it on your phone or planner) an appointment to read some scripture everyday.  Find someone else who has the same resolution and support each other in this endeavor.  Make it simple.  Maybe you could read stories from the new testament for a specific gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John) and read for a small amount of time (10-15 minutes).

Making sure to write your resolution down, partner up with others who have similar resolutions, and make short, attainable goals, should help you make this year the year your resolution really happens!  Above all, ask God to help you by praying about your resolution.  He will give you the strength and determination to carry it through.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

NO1 B4 ME Catholic Middle School Rally

      Make "Ordinary Time" EXTRA-ORDINARY

Now that Pentecost has come and gone and the Easter Season is behind us, we are now in a period of the liturigical year called, "Ordinary Time."  Sometimes, we get confused as to what our purpose is as Catholics during Ordinary Time.  We sometimes think that this is the time of year that we can take a break from our Catholic identities and look forward to Advent in November.  In reality, this is a special time for us to live out our faith daily under ordinary circumstances.

What are some ways we can live as a "EXTRA-ORDINARY CATHOLICS?"  Here are some ideas:

      Service to Others
Our faith is not meant to remain dormant.  A great way to keep our faith alive is through the service of others.  There are many agencies within our community who are constantly looking for volunteers.  Nursing homes, soup kitchens, homeless shelters are just a few examples of places where we can spend some time putting our faith into action.

      Studying Our Faith
Many of us don't know nearly enough about the history or tradition of our Church.  Many times, we don't connect scripture to our daily lives.  We need to take advantage of the many resources available to us (there are links on this website which can help) to study about our faith.  What makes us truly Catholic?  How did the story of our faith begin?  What do the different parts of the Mass mean?  Where do the readings on Sunday come from?  We can study independently, join faith sharing and bible study groups such as "Why Catholic" and "Catholic Scripture Study."  ThE EDGE and Youth Night offer some insight into our faith as well.  It is a challenge in our busy lives to find ways to do this, but if we make it a priority, we will be surprised what could happen.

      Build Community
For some of us, making friends is an easy task.  We start talking to someone who looks interesting and we start hanging out with that person if there is some sort of connection.  In our Catholic faith, we are all connected through the Mystical Body of Christ.  When we start hanging out with other Catholics, we start to form community and those bonds are strong because of our connection to the Body of Christ.  For those of us who have difficulty making new friends, we need to examine where and when we hang out the most and develope a discerning heart when it comes to encountering new people.  All of us are created in God's image, so making and keeping good friends is easier than we think.

Let us pray that this "Ordinary" time of the liturgical year will bring us into a deeper relationship with Christ and help us to build a stronger community of believers here at St. Joseph in the weeks and months to come.

      Amen

      St. Joe's Youth Rocks!

Youth Night and ThE EDGE are stronger than ever.  Make a commitment to be here every week to make new friends and enhance the friendships you already have.

Why do youth keep participating in these weekly events and so much more at St. Joe's?  It's because Jesus calls us to be involved and when we answer that call, it makes us feel GREAT!

If you visit this sight often, you will stay connected with the coolest parish in the Diocese of Fort Worth.  Together, we are building the Body of Christ one youth at a time!

Among the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are calls for Christians to “visit the sick,” “comfort those who suffer,” and “be patient with others.” All of these works can be done by spending time with our elders who are often infirm, lonely, or just desire to share their experience and wisdom. However, the prospect of spending time with the elderly can be intimidating to young adolescents (or anyone). Teens worry, “What will I say or do?” “Will we have anything in common?” “What if they are ill or something happens while I visit?”

For most people, let alone middle-schoolers, public speaking can be an intimidating and even frightening experience. Even more daunting can be leading spontaneous prayer in front of your peers. However, praying in community is an important tradition of our Catholic faith and is a way for young people to grow and mature in their relationship with God and others. This session helps middle school youth build confidence and learn skills to pray out loud with their peers. The session begins with fun and imaginative group skits to get the youth comfortable speaking in front of a group. Youth will then be introduced to the simple prayer format of “You / Who / Do / Through” used to lead spontaneous prayers. After writing their own prayers, youth will bring all the individual prayers together to create one group closing prayer.
